HEX STATE SERVER by Brandon Tay (2026)

At the core of ‘HEX STATE SERVER’ is the interplay between individual agency and destiny, drawing parallels between Chinese divination and computation. Drawing on Yuk Hui’s concepts of recursivity and contingency, our framework proposed that the I Ching functions as proto-computational infrastructure: converting randomness into repeatable procedure, generating signs that demand interpretation while withholding access to operational conditions, distributing agency across state governance and systemic actors. 

The exhibition created temporal recursivity: triggering the sculpture required reading the timeline; reading the timeline reframed the simulation. This operationalised planetary-scale thinking by constructing situations where opacity itself becomes a condition to navigate and interpret.

The exhibition staged this dialectically. The central biomorphic sculpture operated as an oracle simulation, where visitors triggered randomness, generating one of 64 hexagrams that modulated audiovisual environments and micro-fictional scenarios (Kowloon Walled City nostalgia, blind box whispering, irrigation computers). PHANTOM INDEX, a speculative timeline, compressed three millennia of Chinese governance into seven recurring ‘hex states’: technological conditions including permissioned reality, ghost media, logistics as ontology. Visitors used blacklight torches to reveal UV captions, discovering how examination systems prefigure social credit, how treaty ports anticipate SEZs.
